Repeating past mistakes? Finland falls back into Russophobic habits (RT VIDEO)

Helsinki teamed up with Nazi Germany to confront Russia, but it ultimately backfired, as RT sees in a look back at the Nordic nation’s history

Relations between Helsinki and Moscow have rapidly deteriorated over the past few years, since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. Finland has ditched its previous neutral status and joined NATO. It has also reduced its relations with Moscow to near zero, even though Russia repeatedly said it had “no problems at all” with its neighbor.

Finland has tried to create an image of a peaceful state threatened by “an aggressive, imperialist” neighbor – as its president, Alexander Stubb, puts it. But is the threat real? Or are recent developments a sign of Helsinki returning to its former ways? RT looks back at the Nordic nation’s history over the past 100 years.

Assembly Member Takes Stand Against Youth In Drug Abuse In Upper East Region.

0

Hon. Elias Ayinbila Apasiya, Assembly Member for Sumbrungu Azorebisi Electoral Area  has kick against drug abuse among the youth in the Upper East Region.

Hon.Elias Ayinbila Apasiya, has expressed concern about the alarming trend of young individuals who have to be in school are rather engaged in substance abuse, particularly red ,tramadol, and other hard drugs in the region.

Speaking to the media, as a serious increase in drug abuse in this current environment, we have the youth a lot of them engaged in drug pairing, drug abuse and many more.” which is taking a very serious toll on the lives of this youth.

The youth is said to be the future of this country and if the youth at their early age is engaged in illicit drug abuse then there calls for a serious attention because it tells us that the future of this country or system is hanging”.

So issues on drug abuse where the youth is seriously engaged currently should be given the needy attention if not the futureofthiscountry is at stake. “You could have the youth as young as 8-9 years smoking cocaine, marijuana, red and tramadol which this should not be allowed to continue because we are heading towards a doom.

So please, this is a humble appeal especially to the youth, let’s come together, let’s us think of ourselves and see how do we come together to build ourselves, to develop ourselves and at the end of it all, we will develop this country. This is far better than going into drugs”.

Hon. Elias Ayinbila Apasiya urged the youth to consider their education, skills training and engaged in productive business activities as that will transform their lives positively.

“The Lives of this  youth is said to be the future of this country. How do we come together to build ourselves and why do we want to destroy our life, and our future? The youth is the pillar of this country and we love you, we need you and we want you. Let’s try to restrain ourselves and engage in things that will build us for our future, adding that lack of parental care, sometimes could contribute to this kind of attitude and behavior of their children, which sometimes lead them in such activities”.

He appealed to the government to intervene by creating jobs and provide technical and vocational training for the youth in order to help reduce the drug manace.

He urged the youth to engage in innovative approaches to self employment in order to save and reinvest their earnings to build sustainable future, whereas urging parents to be vigilant on their children.

The increasing number of young people succumbing to drug abuse is a call on the relevant authorities to act now, urging the law enforcement agencies to join forces in combating the manace.

The traditional and religious leaders are not excluded in this matter, all are important in this matter in our society. we all are more or less responsible to all that is going on in our environment or Society and therefore, we all have to as a matter of urgency. Therefore. Let’s assume it as our responsibility,he added.

Syrian govt solidifies grip on nation after clashes with US-backed militias

Damascus has announced a peace deal furthering its control over the state’s institutions and oil fields

The Syrian government in Damascus announced a deal with US-backed Kurdish militias on Sunday that strengthens its control over northeastern parts of the country.

The agreement and an accompanying ceasefire follow weeks of deadly clashes. President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who came to power after toppling the previous government in late 2024, is seeking to reassert control over a nation fractured by a decade of civil war and foreign intervention by regional and global players, including the US.

Under the deal, the US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) will integrate into government institutions as demanded by Damascus. The central authorities will also assert civilian control over the northeastern governorates of Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Al-Hasakah, previously under Kurdish administration and contested in the recent fighting.

In return, al-Sharaa pledged to respect Kurdish cultural and linguistic rights and resolve accumulated legal issues regarding Kurds’ status and property. SDF leader Mazloum Abdi is due to meet the president on Monday, after his scheduled trip on Sunday was postponed.

The agreement, announced after al-Sharaa met with US special envoy to Syria Tom Barrack in Damascus, is seen as a major victory for him and his Turkish allies. Ankara views the SDF as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a separatist militant group that has fought a decades-long guerrilla war against Türkiye. The SDF agreed to expel PKK elements from Syrian territory as part of the settlement.

Kurdish troops served as the main US proxy on the ground during Washington’s campaign against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), which gained strength in Syria and Iraq in 2014.

Kurdish control of oil and gas fields in Deir ez-Zor aided the US strategy of economic stifling of the government of former Syrian President Bashar Assad. After al-Sharaa – a former militant leader linked to Al-Qaeda and backed by Türkiye – seized power, the US lifted sanctions, opening avenues for foreign-funded reconstruction.

Gaps in Damascus’ sovereignty were highlighted last October, when the first parliamentary elections under al-Sharaa were held, except in Kurdish-controlled territories or areas held by the Druze, another Syrian ethnic minority with a history of militancy and current links to Israel.

Indian central bank keen on linking BRICS digital currencies – Reuters

0

New Delhi could propose a discussion on connecting members’ digital currencies at the group’s 2026 summit

India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India, has proposed linking BRICS digital currencies to facilitate easier cross-border tourism payments, Reuters reported on Monday.

The move could reduce reliance on the US dollar as geopolitical tensions rise, the news agency said, citing two unnamed sources. India assumed the BRICS presidency in 2026 and will host the group’s summit later this year.

India’s digital currency, the e-rupee, has attracted 7 million retail users since its December 2022 launch, according to the report. China has vowed to boost the international use of the digital yuan.

US President Donald Trump had warned last year that any attempt by BRICS to challenge the US dollar would be met with harsh economic measures. BRICS members targeted by Trump’s latest sanctions, such as India and Brazil, have said they will protect their domestic interests.

Settling trade in national currencies offers BRICS countries a reliable alternative to the Western financial institutions, Russia has said.

National currencies made up 65% of BRICS trade in 2024, with the dollar and euro falling below 30%, according to figures cited by Russia’s Finance Ministry.

Bilateral trade between BRICS members Russia and China hit $245 billion in 2024, with nearly all transactions now conducted in rubles and yuan. Brazil had floated the idea of a common BRICS currency, but the proposal did not materialize, the report said.

BRICS was founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, and later expanded to include South Africa. It has expanded recently with new members such as the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Indonesia.

Trump’s tariffs and warnings aimed at countries aligning with BRICS have prompted enhanced cooperation between India, Russia, and China, the report said

Trump ‘worried’ about Canadian Arctic – NBC

0

Unlike with Greenland, the US president is reportedly not seeking full control over the territory

US President Donald Trump has increasingly expressed concerns about Canada’s inability to protect its northern territories from potential adversaries and is using the same national security pretext he cited to justify his push to bring Greenland under American control, according to several officials cited by NBC News.

In private discussions with aides, the president has grown more vocal in recent weeks about what he sees as Canada’s vulnerability to alleged encroachment from Russia or China, arguing that Ottawa needs to spend more on defense, the unnamed officials claimed.

Both Beijing and Moscow have rejected this narrative. China previously slammed the US president for using it as a pretext for his Arctic ambitions, while Russia has consistently opposed the region’s militarization, framing it as a zone for peaceful cooperation.

“Trump is really worried about the US continuing to drift in the Western Hemisphere and is focused on this,” one official told NBC.

Another senior administration official stated the goal is “solidifying” the hemisphere under US leadership, with securing Canada’s northern border being a key part of that vision.

However, officials were clear that unlike the explicit pursuit of Greenland, there is no discussion of purchasing Canada or stationing US troops along its northern border. The focus is instead on pressuring Ottawa to bolster its own capabilities and deepen bilateral military cooperation, including enhanced joint training, increased patrols, and updated early-warning systems.

“They certainly need to up their game when it comes to Arctic capabilities,” one official said. “The status quo is not enough.”

The warnings from US officials have fueled existing fears in Canada that the country could become Washington’s next target following the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Trump’s talk of seizing Greenland, Bloomberg reported last week.

On a recent visit to Beijing, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that dealing with China had become “more predictable” than the complex relationship with Washington. Carney has also publicly echoed European allies, stating Greenland’s future is a matter for Greenland and Denmark alone and expressing “concern” over Trump’s tariff threats related to the island.

Italian fashion legend Valentino dies at 93

0

Legendary Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani – best known simply as Valentino – has died at 93, his foundation announced on Monday.

The founder of an eponymous haute couture empire, he built his reputation on impeccably constructed gowns and refined silhouettes, promoting timeless, classical beauty over trend-driven fashion.

“Valentino Garavani passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones,” the foundation said on Instagram. “Valentino Garavani was not only a constant guide and inspiration for all of us, but a true source of light, creativity and vision.”

No cause of death has been disclosed, though it is widely described as natural causes. His body will lie in state at the foundation’s headquarters in Rome on Wednesday and Thursday. The funeral will take place at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri on Friday.

Valentino studied haute couture in Milan and Paris before founding his own line in Rome in 1959. In 1960, he met long-time partner Giancarlo Giammetti, who handled business while Valentino led design, turning the house into an internationally recognized brand.

Clients included royals, US first ladies, and movie stars – from Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Princess Diana, to Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Bella Hadid.

Valentino’s empire later expanded to ready-to-wear, menswear, and accessories. The label was sold to an Italian holding company for an estimated $300 million in 1998, but Valentino remained in design until 2008. He retired after a final haute couture show celebrating his 45-year fashion anniversary, where every model wore ‘Valentino red’ – a color which became his signature.

Tributes streamed in following the news of his death. Maison Valentino, the official account of the fashion house, pledged to honor his memory through new creations, praising “his unique style and innate elegance.” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Valentino an “eternal symbol of Italian high fashion.” The family of Giorgio Armani, a fellow fashion icon who died last year, described Valentino as “an undisputed master of grace and elegance, for whom Armani held great admiration.”

Kremlin confirms Davos talks with US delegation

Kirill Dmitriev will discuss settling the Ukraine conflict and economic cooperation with the Americans, Dmitry Peskov has said

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, will meet with the US delegation on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.

Dmitriev wrote on X on Tuesday that he had arrived in Davos. He did not disclose the aim of his visit to the Swiss city, but added a peace dove emoji to his post.

When asked to comment on media reports that the Putin envoy had talks planned with US officials later in the day, Peskov replied by saying: “I can confirm that he really has such plans.”

“Dmitriev is transmitting information regarding the Ukraine peace process back and forth” between Moscow and Washington, he said.

His other task is discussing issues of economic cooperation with the US, the spokesman noted. “You know that we are in favor of resuming those relations,” he added.

Peskov did not say with whom the Putin envoy will be negotiating in Davos, but rejected speculations that he could meet with US President Donald Trump, who is attending WEF this year.

Axios correspondent Barak Ravid claimed earlier that Dmitriev will meet with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and the American leader’s son-in-law Jared Kushner already on Tuesday.

Dmitriev has visited the US several times since Trump took office a year ago. His latest trip took place in December, when he held two days of talks with Witkoff and Kushner. Both sides described the discussions as “constructive.”

Peskov said last week that the Kremlin is looking forward to another visit by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow, although he noted that a date had not yet been set. Bloomberg claimed earlier that a trip could happen already this month.

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov reiterated on Tuesday that Moscow remains committed to a diplomatic settlement of the Ukraine conflict. However, he stressed that plans coming from the EU and UK “aimed at preserving the Kiev regime are absolutely unacceptable for Russia.”

“Under Trump, the US became the only country that has expressed… understanding that Russia’s interests must be taken into account and also proposed solutions that addressed the root causes of the current crisis,” Lavrov said.
