Can Your Landlord Frustrate You Into Leaving Your Home? Here’s What Ghana’s Rent Law Says

0

Across Ghana, many tenants are familiar with the quiet frustration of dealing with a difficult landlord. It could be the endless excuses when repairs are needed, the sudden disconnection of water or electricity, or subtle hints that make you feel unwelcome in your own home.

These experiences can be stressful and leave tenants feeling powerless. What many do not realise is that such behaviour is not just unfair; it is illegal.

Under Ghana’s Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220), any landlord who intentionally frustrates or pressures a tenant to vacate a property commits a criminal offence.

What the Law Says

Rent

Rent

Section 27 of the Act, titled “Offence for Inducing Tenant to Quit,” makes it clear that it is unlawful for anyone to deliberately compel a tenant to leave through harassment or neglect.

The law provides that:

Every person who shall do any act whatsoever, or refrain from doing anything which the conditions of the tenancy require him to do, with intent to compel the lessee of any premises to give up possession thereof shall be guilty of an offence and shall on conviction by the appropriate Rent Magistrate, be liable to a fine not exceeding fifty pounds.

In simple terms, this means a landlord cannot legally make a tenant’s living conditions unbearable to force them out. Examples include refusing to fix a leaking roof, cutting off utilities, or making repeated eviction threats to push the tenant to leave. All these acts amount to an offence under the law.

Penalties and Compensation

Section 27 also outlines the penalties for landlords found guilty of such conduct. It states that if convicted, the Magistrate may impose a fine and, in addition, order the landlord to compensate the tenant for any costs, damage, or inconvenience suffered. The court may also order the reinstatement of the tenant to the property if they were wrongfully forced out.

Although the fine is stated as fifty pounds, reflecting the 1963 currency value, the legal principle remains unchanged. The goal is to ensure that tenants are not unlawfully pressured to vacate their homes.

Why This Protection Matters

The Rent Act was enacted to promote fairness in landlord-tenant relations and to safeguard tenants’ right to secure housing. By criminalising harassment and coercion, the law ensures landlords follow due process when seeking to end a tenancy.

If a landlord wishes to evict a tenant, they must serve the proper notice and, if necessary, apply to the Rent Magistrate for an eviction order. Any attempt to bypass this process is unlawful.

What Tenants Can Do

Tenants who face harassment or deliberate neglect can report the issue to the Rent Control Department or lodge a complaint at the Rent Magistrate’s Court. These bodies have the authority to investigate and act against landlords who violate tenants’ rights.

In Summary

Section 27 of the Rent Act, 1963 (Act 220) clearly states that no landlord has the right to frustrate, intimidate, or compel a tenant to vacate a rented property through unlawful means. Such actions are criminal and can result in fines, compensation, and reinstatement orders.

In short, your landlord cannot frustrate you into leaving your home. The law is firmly on your side, protecting tenants from any unfair or coercive conduct in Ghana’s rental housing sector.

There’s a deliberate effort to blame Bawumia alone for election defeat – Dr. Ekua Amoakoh

0

Deputy Spokesperson for Dr Bawumia’s campaign, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, has criticised what she describes as a calculated attempt by some party members to blame former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia alone for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 election defeat.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, October 17, Dr Amoakoh said it was “quite unfortunate” that some aspirants within the NPP were pushing a narrative that unfairly singles out Dr Bawumia for the party’s loss.

“I saw this making the rounds a couple of days ago and I think it’s quite unfortunate that the campaign is going down this line,” she said. “It seems to me that the other aspirants, mostly, if it’s not to blame His Excellency Dr Bawumia for the election defeat on the back of a government they were all part of.”

Dr Amoakoh argued that those criticising the former Vice President would have been the first to take credit if the NPP had won the election.

“I’m sure if we had won the 2024 election, every one of these aspirants would have come out to mention their contribution and how they helped us win. But now that we have lost, there seems to be a very deliberate attempt to put everything on Dr Bawumia,” she stated.

She added that the attacks only prove that Dr Bawumia remains the dominant figure within the NPP and continues to command strong grassroots support.

“To me, I have always maintained that this action just shows that he is the one to beat. It’s still him — and they are all aware that the spirit of the NPP is still solidly behind him,” she said.
“So what do they have left to do? There’s a lack of messaging, and all they have left is to constantly attack the things he’s done and his persona. But to pick this to attack, I was quite surprised.”

Dr Amoakoh also referenced Dr Bawumia’s calm and statesmanlike conduct during the aftermath of the 2024 elections, saying it was in the nation’s best interest.

“We were all here and we saw the reaction from Ghanaians when Dr Bawumia decided to put the peace of the nation ahead of whatever might have happened on election day,” she said.
“So from that to now, to try to spin it into something negative is quite funny for me because it’s not even sinking.”

She said that while the campaign season has seen heightened internal criticism, Dr Bawumia remains focused on his message of unity and progress for the NPP.

Rubber industry under threat as Galamsey lures youth — Ahanta West MCE

0

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ahanta West Municipal District, Ebenezer Aidoo, has expressed concern over how illegal mining activities are luring young people away from the rubber industry with the promise of quick money.

Speaking on JoyNews AM Show, he said many youth are abandoning stable employment in rubber plantations for illegal mining (galamsey) because they believe the returns are higher.

“When they go to the rubber estate, if they are marked one cedi, now if you go to the galamsey site, it’s going to be marked times five. So, that is the appetite for these young people — that when I go to any galamsey site, I’m going to make more money,” Aidoo said.

The MCE noted that this growing interest in galamsey is threatening the survival of the rubber industry, which plays a crucial role in the local economy of Ahanta West.

He stressed that hundreds of residents depend on rubber plantations and farming for their livelihoods.

He added that the assembly is rolling out alternative livelihood programmes aimed at creating attractive economic opportunities to discourage young people from venturing into illegal mining.

“We are taking it up to make sure that we can save the rubber industry because our economy in Ahanta West also depends on it,” he explained.

“We have a huge chunk of people working in this rubber plantation and rubber farming, and we’ll see how best we work it out.”

Ebenezer Aidoo also highlighted the significance of rubber to the local economy, noting that truckloads of raw rubber are transported regularly from the area, a sign of its economic contribution.

Illegal mining continues to pose environmental, economic, and social challenges across Ghana.

In several communities, the sector has drawn labour away from agriculture and other legitimate industries, fuelling concerns about sustainability and community development.

The MCE maintained that protecting the rubber industry is key to sustaining jobs and preserving economic stability in Ahanta West.

No surname consideration in security services recruitment under NDC – Asiedu Nketia vows merit-only system

0

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says an NDC government will end the era of politically influenced recruitment into Ghana’s security services.

He said the party will institute a transparent, merit-based system where competence and qualification, not political connections, determine who gets in.

Speaking in the Akatsi North constituency on Thursday, October 16, 2025, as part of his thank-you tour, Mr Asiedu Nketia said the policy will restore professionalism and fairness within the country’s security institutions.

“We will make sure that our security services are properly balanced, even regionally,” he said.

“We are departing from a system where people are recruited based on their surnames to ensure that the services are truly representative and professional.”

Mr Asiedu Nketia stressed that the NDC’s goal is to build a credible and transparent recruitment process that reflects Ghana’s diversity and strengthens national unity.

He said a reformed, merit-driven security structure will not only inspire public confidence but also ensure that Ghana’s armed and protective forces remain loyal to the state, not to political parties.

Let everybody do their thing, you know. We shall meet at the top.”

He explained, it is the “Ayoo” crooner who often initiates conflict by going online to rant, criticise, and pick fights with colleagues , even those who have shown him nothing but respect. “No artiste will just wake up in the morning, pick his camera, and go live to insult or attack Shatta Wale. But he does that, and not just once or twice. He goes hard on almost everyone in the industry,” Stonebwoy stated.

He went on to add that Shatta Wale’s repeated outbursts have turned him into his own worst enemy, as his constant confrontations push people away instead of promoting unity. “Shatta Wale is his own enemy. He keeps ranting about issues and going hard on people unnecessarily. That’s why people react the way they do. It’s not an attack , it’s a reaction,” Stonebwoy emphasised. The dancehall musician concluded by urging for maturity, respect, and collaboration among Ghanaian artistes, stressing that continuous feuds only hold back the growth of the music industry.

‘Otto Addo has delivered’ – Chibsah backs Black Stars coach for World Cup

0

Former Black Stars midfielder, Yussif Chibsah wants head coach Otto Addo to stay on as Black Stars coach having “delivered” the 2026 World Cup qualification.

Otto guided the team to five wins in the final six World Cup qualifiers to secure qualification for the global tournament.

The 50-year-old is the first Ghanaian to lead the senior national team to back-to-back World Cup qualifications after doing so for the 2022 edition.

However, concerns continue to grow about his ability to lead the team on the global stage, having failed to secure a spot for December’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“Coaches are being assessed by their output. So far, Otto Addo has delivered,” Chibsah, who doubles as Head of Player Relations at the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), told Asema FM.

“The ultimate goal was to qualify us for the World Cup [and] he has delivered. There is no other reason for him to be dismissed.

“From all angles, it will be unfair to Otto Addo [to say he has failed].

Meanwhile, the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set for December 5 in Washington, where Ghana will learn their group-stage opponents.

Zelensky to make case for missiles at White House, after Trump and Putin agree meeting

0

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday, as Trump weighs whether to arm Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles capable of striking deep into Russia.

Their meeting comes a day after Trump said “great progress” was made during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the pair agreeing to face-to-face talks in Hungary.

Trump said the call, the first with Putin since mid-August, was “very productive”, adding that teams from Washington and Moscow will meet next week.

As Zelensky arrived in the US, his third visit since January, he said Moscow was “rushing to resume dialogue as soon as it hears about Tomahawks”.

Zelensky has called on the US to provide Ukraine with the advanced missiles, which have a range of 2,500 km (1,500 miles).

Asked earlier this week if Trump was considering giving Ukraine Tomahawks, he said: “We’ll see… I may.”

But when asked about the same prospect following his call with Putin, Trump said “we can’t deplete” the US stockpile of Tomahawks, adding “we need them too… so I don’t know what we can do about that”.

Writing on his Truth Social platform after his call with Putin concluded, Trump said he and the Russian president “spent a great deal of time talking about Trade between Russia and the United States when the War with Ukraine is over”.

He said “high level advisors” from both countries would meet at an unspecified location next week, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading the American delegation.

Trump also said he would update Zelensky on his talks with Putin on Friday, adding: “I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.”

He later told reporters he expected to meet Putin in Hungary “within two weeks”.

Trump has been seen as more sympathetic toward Russia than his predecessor Joe Biden, but in recent months has taken a stiffer line with Putin.

He had hoped a face-to-face summit in Alaska in August would help convince the Russian president to enter into comprehensive peace talks to end the war – but that meeting failed to produce a decisive breakthrough.

They spoke again days later when Trump interrupted a meeting with Zelensky and European leaders to call Putin.

Trump and Putin could have another talk a week after Rubio’s meeting with advisors, Hungary’s prime minister said.

Viktor Orban told state radio he would speak to the Russian president later on Friday.

“Since the EU is pro-war, it is logical that it will be left out of this peace process,” he said.

The planned meeting in Budapest was “great news for the peace-loving people of the world”, Orban wrote on X on Thursday, and he added that he had spoken to Trump by phone.

Earlier, he also said: “Peace requires patience, strength, and humility. Europe must shift its stance. Instead of arrogance and fanning the flames of endless war, we need negotiations with Russia. Only dialogue can bring peace to our continent.”

Hours before the Trump-Putin call, Russia launched one of its largest attacks of the year on Ukraine, including 28 ballistic missiles, and 320 drones, according to Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, Olga Stefanishyna.

Stefanishyna said Russia launching overnight strikes on Ukraine before the call “exposes Moscow’s real attitude toward peace”.

In a statement to the BBC’s US partner CBS, she added: “These assaults show that Moscow’s strategy is one of terror and exhaustion. The only effective response is pressure – through tougher sanctions, reinforced air defense, and the supply of long-range capabilities.”

Though Trump had indicated that he was considering sending long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, he told reporters the US could not deplete its stockpile. “We need them too”, he said after Friday’s call with Putin.

Ukraine’s navy does not have the necessary ships to operate them, and the US has a small number of launchers needed for the missiles – typically mounted on ships and submarines.

In 2019, the US began reviving the Tomahawk land-based mobile launcher programme after the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, which had banned this version, ceased to exist.

The new system is called Typhon, and it entered service with the US Army in 2023.

Currently, the US military has at least two Typhon launchers, but it is unlikely to have many more.

The possibility of the US sending Ukraine long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles would cause “extreme concern”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday, adding such a move would be viewed in Russia as “a major escalation.”

During his presidential election campaign, Trump claimed he would be able to end the war in Ukraine within days but has since admitted resolving the conflict has been more challenging than any he has been involved in since returning to power.

Trump’s strained relations with Zelensky came to a head on 28 February when he and Vice-President JD Vance berated the Ukrainian president in the Oval Office on live television.

But public relations with Zelensky have vastly improved in recent months.

In September, Trump signalled a major shift in his view of the conflict, saying he believed Kyiv could “win all of Ukraine back in its original form”, a far cry from his public calls for Kyiv to cede territory occupied by Russia.

In late July, Trump set Putin a deadline of less than a fortnight to agree to a ceasefire or face sweeping sanctions, including measures against countries which still trade with Russia.

But he did not follow through the threat after Putin agreed to meet Trump in Alaska, which the US president hailed as a significant diplomatic success at the time, despite it not producing any tangible outcome.

Earlier on Thursday, India’s foreign ministry cast doubt on a claim made by Trump a day earlier saying Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil.

An Indian government spokesman said he was “not aware of any conversation between the two leaders” taking place the previous day, after Trump said Modi had assured him purchases would stop “within a short period of time”.

The US has pushed for countries – in particular India, China and Nato members – to stop buying Russian energy in an effort to increase economic pressure on the Kremlin. Zelensky has also repeatedly echoed those calls.

The “On God” hitmaker further argued that the government should show equal care and consideration to all citizens, not just those in political positions. “When there’s a problem in this country, we see how the president is treated when he’s unwell, how he’s discreetly flown abroad for medical care. That same level of concern should be shown to every important person in Ghana,” he remarked.

Shatta Wale also made a bold claim about his economic influence, asserting that his contributions to Ghana’s economy through entertainment and job creation surpass those of major government ministries. “I can confidently say that I have made more money for this country than the Ministry of Finance or the Ministry of Tourism. Richard Ofori eyes Black Stars return for 2026 World Cup

0

Ghana goalkeeper Richard Ofori says he is focused on his performances right now despite eyeing a return to the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to iDiski Times, the AmaZulu goalkeeper admitted that while the dream of representing Ghana in North America drives him, he knows the only way to get there is through consistent performances.

“I’m working hard and focusing on my team at the moment. That’s what you need to do if you want to be there [at the World Cup],” he said.

The former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper also revealed he hasn’t spoken to Black Stars coach Otto Addo recently but holds no grudges.

“Recently, no. I haven’t spoken to the coach. But before, he used to call and check up on his players. He’s a good man. He hasn’t abandoned anyone; he just focuses more on those who are actively playing, especially since the qualifiers were so intense,” Ofori explained.

For now, the 31-year-old’s goal is to help AmaZulu push higher up the South African Premier League table, a task he believes will strengthen his claim for a national team recall.
