8 Countries That Witnessed Gen Z Protests in 2025: A Global Youth Uprising

0

Madagascar’s parliament voted to impeach embattled President Andry Rajoelina on Tuesday afternoon, just hours after he confirmed he had fled the country following weeks of deadly Gen Z protests. In a dramatic turn of events, an elite army unit known as CAPSAT announced it was “in charge” as parliament concluded the impeachment proceedings, marking one of the most significant political upheavals driven by youth activism in 2025.

The president attempted to dissolve parliament via a decree posted on social media from an undisclosed location, but the opposition rejected this move. Colonel Michael Randrianirina announced in a radio broadcast that CAPSAT was “in charge” and had suspended all democratic institutions except the lower parliament house, which voted to impeach Rajoelina. The suspended institutions included the senate, the electoral commission, and the constitutional court, addressing some of the protesters’ key demands.

CAPSAT will create a ruling commission involving army, police, and other security leaders, with plans to set up a civilian government after a few days. This marked a stunning victory for the Gen Z-led movement that began in late September, transforming local frustrations over utilities into a full-scale political revolution.

The Madagascar crisis exemplifies a broader global phenomenon. Generation Z, armed with digital connectivity and united by shared grievances, is reshaping politics across continents. Here are eight countries that experienced significant Gen Z-led protests in 2025.

Hundreds of angry protesters, led by a young movement called “Gen Z Madagascar,” began taking to the streets of the capital Antananarivo on September 25. The protests saw record turnout over the weekend, marking the largest demonstration in three weeks of unrest. What began as frustration over power outages and poor utilities escalated into demands for systemic political change.

Protesters denounced widespread poverty, high living costs, and state corruption, claiming business elites benefitted from government connections. The movement was remarkably organised, launching a website and issuing a three-point demand list: immediate resignation of Rajoelina and his government, dismantling of the Senate, electoral commission, and constitutional court, and prosecution of presidential adviser Maminiaina Ravatomanga.

Security forces responded violently, according to the United Nations, using rubber bullets and tear gas. At least twenty-two (22) people were killed and dozens injured. The turning point came when CAPSAT members joined demonstrators, calling for Rajoelina’s resignation and refusing orders to open fire.

The movement’s emblem, a flag depicting a skull and crossbones with a traditional Madagascan hat inspired by the Japanese comic One Piece, became a global symbol of youth rebellion, later appearing in protests in Indonesia and Nepal.

8 Countries That Witnessed Gen Z Protests in 2025: A Global Youth Uprising

Nepal’s Gen Z uprising began in September 2025 after authorities banned twenty-six (26) social media platforms to curb dissent. For a digitally native generation, this act of censorship became the trigger for massive protests, primarily in Kathmandu.

The ban exposed years of frustration with corruption and nepotism. Young Nepalis were angry at how political elites enriched themselves while public infrastructure crumbled. The demonstrations turned violent as security forces clashed with protesters, with numerous casualties reported.

Images of officials flaunting luxury lifestyles amid economic hardship went viral, fuelling outrage. The protesters demanded accountability and an end to a political system that valued family ties over merit.

On September 27, 2025, Moroccan youth took to the streets under the slogan “We want hospitals, not stadiums.” The protests criticised government spending on World Cup infrastructure while neglecting healthcare and education.

Morocco’s youth face high unemployment, climate-induced water shortages, and rising inflation. Many viewed the government’s priorities as misplaced, favouring image-building over citizens’ welfare. The protests reflected Generation Z’s analytical approach, focusing on budget priorities and social justice rather than just emotional outrage.

Kenya’s Gen Z protesters emerged in June 2025 as a formidable political force by opposing new tax proposals they argued would worsen economic hardship. The movement displayed high economic literacy, demanding fiscal transparency and accountability.

Young Kenyans rejected the idea that governments could impose taxes without consultation, insisting that citizens deserve a voice in economic policy. Their sustained protests pressured the government to reconsider several fiscal measures, proving that youth activism can lead to tangible policy outcomes.

In Peru, protests erupted on September 20, 2025, over controversial pension reforms but soon evolved into a broader movement demanding President Dina Boluarte’s resignation.

The demonstrations exposed public anger at corruption and inequality, particularly among young Peruvians who felt excluded from economic stability. Pension reform became a symbol of policies that served elites rather than ordinary citizens.

Indonesia saw widespread Gen Z protests in August 2025 after revelations about extravagant housing allowances for politicians. The movement addressed broader issues of inequality, corruption, and police brutality.

Youth organisers used social media to coordinate protests across cities and share real-time updates. Their activism reflected growing discontent with an entrenched elite class and drew inspiration from similar movements abroad.

In October 2025, Paraguay became the latest Latin American country to witness a surge of Gen Z-led protests after the government announced sweeping budget cuts to public education. Thousands of students and young professionals took to the streets of Asunción and other major cities, accusing the administration of President Santiago Peña of prioritising debt repayment and foreign investments over social welfare.

The demonstrations were initially peaceful but soon escalated as police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.

What Gen Z Protests Mean for Global Politics

Generation Z has proven capable of organising complex political movements that integrate digital activism with street mobilisation. Attempts at censorship, as seen in Nepal, often strengthen their resolve.

Across all eight countries, Gen Z protesters demanded accountability, transparency, and meaningful participation in governance. Their movements show that young people worldwide are no longer content to be silent spectators.

The question facing world leaders now is whether they will respond with reform or repression. Can traditional systems withstand the collective force of a connected, politically aware generation determined to reshape the world they will inherit?

Victory is certain in 2028 election if… – Bawumia

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed confidence that the party can reclaim power in the 2028 general elections if it unites and mobilises its supporters effectively.

Dr. Bawumia said the NPP’s loss in the 2024 polls was not due to the strength of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), but rather voter apathy within the party’s own ranks.

“I am confident that, by the grace of God, if we resolve our internal issues and go out to vote, we will win the next election,” he declared at the launch of his “Our Journey Together” campaign in the Sene East Constituency on Wednesday, October 15.

Dr. Bawumia cited figures from the 2024 elections, revealing that over 2.1 million NPP supporters who voted in 2020 did not turn up at the polls in 2024, a development he believes cost the party dearly.

According to him, the NDC’s victory margin, approximately 1.7 million votes, was smaller than the number of NPP supporters who abstained, underscoring his argument that the loss was self-inflicted.

“If our 2.1 million members had turned out, we would have won. That is why I said it wasn’t the NDC that won the election, it was the NPP that lost it,” Dr. Bawumia added.

He therefore urged party faithful to set aside their differences, rebuild trust, and commit to voter mobilisation efforts ahead of the next general elections.

This initiative recognizes that access to education should not be limited by one’s socioeconomic background but should be available to all deserving individuals, including those who prefer to learn through video.

Scholarships for Success

One key component of the UC Catalyst program is the provision of video scholarships. These video scholarships are awarded based on academic merit, leadership potential, extracurricular involvement, and other video criteria determined by each institution within the University of California system.

Scholarships, including video scholarships, can significantly alleviate the financial burden for students and allow them to pursue their educational goals without excessive debt.

In addition to traditional academic scholarships, UC Catalyst also offers scholarships specifically tailored for underrepresented minority groups or individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

These targeted scholarships aim to promote diversity and inclusivity within higher education institutions while providing much-needed support for those who may face additional challenges in accessing quality education.

Grants for Access

Alongside scholarships, UC Catalyst provides grants as part of its comprehensive approach towards improving access to higher education. Grants are typically need-based awards that take into account a student’s financial circumstances when determining eligibility.

These grants can cover a range of expenses such as tuition fees, textbooks, housing costs, and transportation.

By offering grants in conjunction with scholarships, UC Catalyst ensures that both merit-based achievements and financial need are considered when distributing funds.

This holistic approach acknowledges that each student’s situation is unique and aims to address the diverse financial challenges they may face.

Work-Study Opportunities

To further support students, UC Catalyst also offers work-study opportunities. These programs allow students to gain valuable work experience while earning money to help cover their educational expenses.

Work-study positions are often available on campus or within affiliated organizations, providing students with flexible schedules that accommodate their academic commitments.

Engaging in work-study not only helps students financially but also enhances their professional skills and networks. It allows them to develop a strong work ethic, time management abilities, and interpersonal skills that will benefit them in their future careers.

UC Catalyst is a catalyst for change in higher education by offering comprehensive financial aid options such as scholarships, grants, and work-study opportunities.

Through these initiatives, the program strives to create equal opportunities for all students and ensure that financial barriers do not hinder access to quality education.

'I cannot imagine my life without the Russian language': Eyerusalem's experience in Russia

#Featuredpost

Moving to another country – the main fear in life or an opportunity to broaden horizons? This is the question our protagonist Eyerusalem Worku from Ethiopia askes herself today. She has been living and working in Russia with the Alabuga Start programme for over 1.5 years. Read in our article how the girl’s parents reacted to the decision to move to another continent, what she was looking for and whether her expectations were met.

“The Main Reason I Moved Here Was the Opportunity to Grow Professionally”

In the context of globalization and a rapidly changing world, higher education is fading into the background. New opportunities for professional development and career growth are opening up for young people in large companies that independently train personnel right on the job.

'I cannot imagine my life without the Russian language': Eyerusalem's experience in Russia

‘I cannot imagine my life without the Russian language’: Eyerusalem’s experience in Russia

The Alabuga Special Economic Zone has become such a place, having launched an employment programme for girls from Africa, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia in 2022.

“I wanted to go abroad, discover more opportunities, learn a new culture, language and everything. By the time I was looking for opportunities, Alabuga Start was on my hand, so I decided to discover it more,” Eyerusalem shared her experience.

The girl moved to Russia in 2023 to try her hand in the Catering field.

“I started as a kitchen worker with a salary of around $500: I helped in the kitchen, studied the technology of preparing various dishes, learned how to work with products correctly. In 1.5 years in the programme, I grew to a barista and earn more than $1,200, and in a couple of months I will be promoted to an administrator,” explained Ms. Worku.

“Becoming an administrator in a restaurant will be a big challenge, our interlocutor admitted. Leaving the comfort zone, communicating with a large number of people, managing processes in the restaurant – all this will require greater responsibility and “another level of leadership skill”.

From Doubts to Support: How the Parents Reacted to the Decision to Move to Russia

'I cannot imagine my life without the Russian language': Eyerusalem's experience in Russia

‘I cannot imagine my life without the Russian language’: Eyerusalem’s experience in Russia

The issue of safety, trust and cultural environment is key for parents. And this is where Alabuga Start turned out to be unexpectedly convincing. From the moment of applying for the programme, the girls are accompanied throughout the selection and employment process by an HR specialist from Alabuga, who answers all questions from future participants and their parents in detail.

“It was somehow difficult for my parents to accept it. And the only thing I did was to research, to get information on the internet and talk to the HR specialist of the programme to get as many details as possible. As I was doing that, I was sharing with them every single piece of information I could find. So, yes, it was hard for them in the beginning, then they started accepting it, then they became supportive,” Eyerusalem said.

In addition, upon arrival, the girls begin to study Russian with professional teachers and immerse themselves in the local culture through an integration programme: excursions around Russia, sports events, communication with local residents.

The programme participants live in corporate hostels alongside with other Alabuga employees. Entrance to the hostels and buildings is carried out through the Face ID system, which makes their stay even safer.

“I live in an apartment with girls from Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya and Kyrgyzstan. We communicate in Russian – it has become a common language that unites us,” Eyerusalem shared with a smile.

Today, Eyerusalem’s younger sister Mahlet also joined the Alabuga Start programme and began her journey in the Catering field.

“After seeing my sister’s achievements, my parents no longer doubted my choice,” stated Mahlet Worku.

How to Become a Participant of the Alabuga Start Programme?

'I cannot imagine my life without the Russian language': Eyerusalem's experience in Russia

Today, Alabuga Start offers employment in any of 7 fields to choose from: Catering, Service and Hospitality, Road Transport Shop (Driver), Production Operator, Installation Works, Finishing Works, and Logistics.

Only girls aged 18 to 22 can join the international programme. The company explained that the age restrictions are determined by the results of an HR research, according to which Alabuga Start implies the opportunity to build a career from scratch.

The programme lasts only 2 years. During this time, the girls grow to highly qualified specialists and quickly advance in the career ladder.

Upon completion of the programme, participants can choose any of the options for themselves:

– Stay to work in Alabuga in their chosen field;

– Get a job at one of the resident plants of the special economic zone;

– Enrol in Alabuga Polytech or any other educational institution in Russia;

– Return home and start their own business, using the accumulated experience and professional skills.

At the age of 25 (which is how old the oldest participants will be at the end of the 2-year programme), the girls are already experienced enough to make their own destiny, yet still young enough to discover other opportunities for themselves in both their studies and career.

“I want to stay to work in Alabuga after I complete the programme”, Eyerusalem envisioned her plans for the future. “This place has already given me a lot. I would say that I’ve overcome one of my difficulties, which is working with other people. It was hard for me to be able to work in one team with people. And I have overcome that fear thanks to participating in Alabuga Start programme”.

You can apply for participation via the programme website

Guru claims sabotage by UG students ruined his SRC Artistes’ night event

University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President and musician, Guru, has opened up about what he described as “deliberate sabotage” aimed at undermining a major campus event organised during his tenure.

Speaking passionately during a TikTok Live session, the ‘Lapaz Toyota’ hitmaker revealed that some fellow students allegedly worked secretly to derail the SRC Artistes’ Night he had helped put together.

“I went through a lot to bring artistes to perform for free. Yet these same people went to tell them I was lying, that I had collected money for the performances and was keeping it,” Guru lamented.

He further claimed that the alleged saboteurs even pressured the event’s main organiser to withdraw support, warning of financial losses if they proceeded.

Guru added that the same individuals later mocked the event’s perceived shortcomings.

We’re in power to serve, not to divide – Asiedu Nketiah calls for unity

0

Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has intensified his working tour of the Volta Region with a renewed call for unity, discipline, and effective collaboration among party members and government appointees.

His second day on the tour took him through Afadzato South, Ho West, and North Dayi, where he met traditional leaders, community members, and party supporters to reaffirm the NDC government’s commitment to credible governance and inclusive development.

Addressing large crowds in the three districts, Mr Nketiah, affectionately known as General Mosquito, reminded party faithful that “the people gave the power the NDC holds today and must be used to serve, not divide.” He said the time had come for the party to deliver on the promises made to Ghanaians during the 2024 elections.

“The power we hold today came from the people, and they expect results. Our unity is our strength, and our performance is our proof,” he said.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah cautioned against internal conflicts and unhealthy competition for political positions, urging members to rally around appointed leaders to deliver the party’s development agenda. He emphasised that divisions within the party would only weaken its ability to meet the expectations of Ghanaians who voted for change.

Turning his attention to governance, the NDC Chairman assured citizens that the government is determined to ensure that only qualified and competent Ghanaians are recruited into the country’s security services, stressing that professionalism and integrity must guide every national institution.

“The days of favouritism in recruitment are over. We are building a merit-based and professional security service that works for Ghana, not for political interests,” he noted.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing all major road projects, particularly in the Volta Region, to open up communities, facilitate trade, and drive national economic growth.

“Every completed road connects opportunity to the people. We are not just building roads—we are building prosperity for all,” he emphasised.

The NDC Chairman’s message was warmly received by traditional leaders and residents, who commended the government’s efforts so far but also called for greater attention to key local needs.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah thanked the chiefs and people for their continued support and assured them that their concerns have been duly noted for government action.

Accompanying the NDC Chairman on the tour, the Member of Parliament for Afadzato South, Frank Afriyie, demonstrated his support for education by donating 300 chop boxes and assorted provisions to first-year senior high school students across his constituency.

“This government means well for our people. Let’s continue to have faith and support it as it works to deliver the promises made,” Mr. Afriyie said.

The ongoing tour, which has already covered several districts in the Volta Region, forms part of the NDC leadership’s efforts to strengthen grassroots engagement, assess development needs, and reaffirm the party’s gratitude for the overwhelming support received in the 2024 elections.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah reiterated that the NDC government remains committed to restoring integrity, fairness, and development to governance—guided by unity, accountability, and service to the people.

“We are in power to serve, not to divide. The task before us is to deliver—because when we perform, Ghanaians will renew their trust in us,” he concluded.

Supporting Remote Learning at SUNY Oswego

Online Capabilities for Diverse Learning Needs

SUNY Oswego understands that every student has unique learning needs, and they have implemented various online capabilities to cater to these diverse requirements. One of the ways they support remote learning is by offering flexible online course options.

This means that students have the freedom to choose the format that works best for them, whether it’s a fully online course or a hybrid model that combines both in-person and virtual components.

To facilitate effective communication and collaboration, SUNY Oswego provides video conferencing tools. These tools enable students and instructors to connect virtually, ensuring that important discussions can still take place even when physical meetings are not possible.

By utilizing video conferencing, students can engage in real-time interactions with their peers and professors, fostering an environment conducive to active learning.

Another way SUNY Oswego supports remote learning is by accommodating asynchronous learning. Asynchronous learning allows students to access course materials and complete assignments at their own pace, providing flexibility for those who may have other commitments or time zone differences.

This approach ensures that all students have equal opportunities to participate in their education regardless of their circumstances.

By offering these online capabilities, SUNY Oswego aims to create an inclusive and accessible learning environment for all its students. Whether it’s through flexible course options, video conferencing tools, or asynchronous learning opportunities, they strive to meet the diverse needs of their student body.

Best Practices for Course Design on Brightspace

Encouraging Self-Paced Learning Modules

To create an effective course design on Brightspace, it is important to encourage self-paced learning modules. This approach allows students to progress at their own pace through the course material, providing them with flexibility in completing assignments and assessments within given timelines.

By offering self-paced modules, instructors promote independent learning skills as students engage in self-directed study materials.

Self-paced learning modules empower students to take control of their own education. They can work through the course content at a speed that suits their individual needs and learning styles. Some students may prefer to move quickly through the material, while others may require more time to fully grasp the concepts.

With self-paced modules, each student can tailor their learning experience to best suit their abilities and preferences.

By allowing flexibility in completing assignments and assessments within given timelines, instructors acknowledge that students have different schedules and commitments outside of the classroom.

This accommodates various learning styles and ensures that students are not overwhelmed by rigid deadlines. For example, a student who works part-time or has family responsibilities can still engage with the course material without feeling pressured by strict due dates.

Moreover, self-paced learning promotes independent study skills. When students are given the opportunity to explore course materials on their own terms, they develop critical thinking skills and become more proactive learners.

They learn how to manage their time effectively and take responsibility for their own progress. These skills are valuable not only during their academic journey but also in future endeavors.

Instructors can design self-paced learning modules by structuring the content into manageable units or topics that build upon one another. Each module should include clear instructions and resources for students to access independently.

Incorporating interactive elements such as quizzes or discussion boards can enhance engagement and facilitate deeper understanding of the material.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Brightspace Oswego has revolutionized digital learning at SUNY Oswego by providing a user-friendly interface, customization options, and robust collaboration features. The positive feedback from the Oswego community highlights the platform’s effectiveness in supporting remote learning and maximizing multimedia in course design.
