2026 World Cup: I wish Herve Renard joins Otto Addo on Ghana’s bench – Kojo Addae Mensah

0

CEO of Databank and sports pundit, Kojo Addae Mensah has suggested the inclusion of Saudi Arabia coach, Herve Renard, in the Black Stars technical team to beef up the team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Renard is among the coaches who will be in the tournament next June after leading to Saudi Arabia to reach the World Cup for the second time in a row.

In an interview with Luv FM on the Sports Blitz Xtra, Addae Mensah expressed his wish for Ghana to explore the possibility of bringing the French on board to work alongside Otto Addo, highlighting his experience and winning the AFCON.

“Left to me alone, if we can figure out a way of bringing in Harvey Renard to stand side by side with Otto Addo to join the squad as somebody who has won the AFCON and been, to the Mundial I would love that,” he said.

Addae Mensah acknowledged the difficulty in defining Renard’s position in the coaching staff if he joins the team.

“We may just have to leave things as they are, because what will be his role? You can’t call him technical advisor, because you have a technical advisor, you can’t call him a set- piece, or striker’s coach, or personal assistance to Otto. It’s a difficult one, but, maybe we just have to go with what we have,” he stated.

He also admitted that it is impossible to change the entire the technical team after qualifying for the World Cup.

“They have qualified us. They have played eight games won, seven and drawn one, not lost. That’s the record. If you add the Qatar World Cup qualification, two games there again, no loss. Yes, the World Cup proper wasn’t great. They must have learned something from there,” he said.

Herve Renard has been a long-time favourite for many Ghanaians to coach the national team and has been a top candidate when the job became vacant.

He has worked previously for Ghana as physical trainer and assistant coach, with Claude Le Roy from 2007 to 2008.

Otto Addo is Black Stars head coach, position has not changed – Randy Abbey

0

Black Stars Management Committee Chairman Randy Abbey has reiterated the position of Otto Addo as the team’s head coach, praising him for doing well “on the basis of data.”

Under the tutelage of the former Dortmund trainer, Ghana were winless in six AFCON qualifying matches, which saw them miss out on this year’s continental event, which kicks off in December in Morocco – for the first time since 2004.

However, Otto guided the team to five wins in the final six World Cup qualifiers to secure qualification for the global tournament.

The 50-year-old is the first Ghanaian to lead the senior national team to back-to-back World Cup qualifications after doing so for the 2022 edition.

However, concerns continue to grow about his ability to lead the team on the global stage.

“On the basis of the data, you cannot say that he’s done a bad job. Otto Addo is the coach of the Black Stars, and that position has not changed,” Randy told Asempa FM.

“Any Ghanaian has the right to express their view and open a discussion [about Otto Addo].

He [Otto Addo] has a contract which has not ended, and his employers have not said anything. He has just qualified for the World Cup, and I think we should celebrate that and focus on how we will prepare our team.”

Meanwhile, the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set for December 5 in Washington, where Ghana will learn their group-stage opponents.

Thousands protest in Tunisia’s Gabes over pollution crisis

0

Thousands took to the streets of the Tunisian coastal city of Gabes in a huge march on Wednesday, in an escalation of protests that began last week over pollution from the state Chemical Group’s (CGT) phosphate complex.

The large-scale protests heighten pressure on President Kais Saied’s government, which fears the unrest may spread to other regions of the country.

The government, already pressured by a deep financial crisis, needs to balance public health demands with the production of phosphate, Tunisia’s most valuable natural resource.

The protesters chanted slogans such as “we want to live” and “Gabes is crying out for help”.

The protesters marched towards Chatt Essalam, a coastal suburb to the north of the city, where the chemical group is located. There, witnesses said that police fired tear gas to disperse them as they approached the headquarters.

In the capital, Tunis, crowds also gathered in support of Gabes, highlighting growing national concern over the environmental crisis and the call for urgent government action.

Residents of Gabes say they are suffering from increased respiratory illnesses, osteoporosis and an increased incidence of cancer due to the toxic gases emitted by the factory’s units.

The latest wave of protests was triggered earlier this month after dozens of schoolchildren suffered breathing difficulties caused by toxic fumes from a plant that converts phosphates into phosphoric acid and fertilizers.

CGT did not reply to Reuters’ attempts to seek comment on the situation in Gabes.

Khaireddine Diba, one of the protesters, said: “Today, our voice will be loud and resounding until this crime stops immediately.”

Saied said this month that Gabes was suffering an “environmental assassination” due to what he called criminal policy choices by a previous government.

He called on ministries to maintain the units to stop leaks as a first step.

However, the protesters reject temporary solutions and demand the permanent closure and relocation of the units.

Tons of industrial waste are discharged into the sea at Chatt Essalam daily.

Environmental groups warn that marine life has been severely affected, with local fishermen reporting a dramatic decline in fish stocks over the past decade, hitting a vital source of income for many in the region.

Ascend to the highest pinnacle – Asogli State blesses Asiedu Nketia

0

Chiefs of Asogli State have blessed Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), wishing him success and ascension to the highest pinnacle in his endeavours.

Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu XII, Awafiaga of Asogli State, extended the blessings and good wishes to Mr Nketia for coming to thank them after the party’s 2024 victory, while acknowledging his leadership and dedication to the governing NDC.

Mr Nketia visited the Asogli Palace in Ho on Wednesday as part of his “Thank You Tour.”

“May the gods of our land and the God Almighty above give you the strength, give you good health and protect you so that you succeed in all that you do…

“We are so grateful that, as a mark of tradition, you didn’t come empty-handed. You’ve given us something. We’ll hold a libation and let our forefathers know that you are still the Chairman of the great party and that they should protect you. And wherever you want to go, may you ascend to the highest pinnacle.”

Mr Nketia, on his part, expressed gratitude to the chiefs and people of the area for their electoral support to the NDC, highlighting the achievement of a massive win in the 2024 polls.

He underscored the significance of face-to-face communication, saying that though the President earlier visited Ho, the Volta Region’s capital, to thank the region’s people, coming again as the party’s Chairman was a reflection of past practices during the late former President John Rawlings’ tenure.

“And after thanking you, the other reason I think is that these types of meetings constitute the lifeblood of every organisation.

“Those who have been in NDC for long realise that during President Rawlings’ time, every six months, we deployed all government appointees, ministers and chief executive officers to reach out to all the constituencies in the country to explain government policies, the implementation, where we have reached and then also take feedback on the policies to government.

“And by so doing, we were always able to carry the public along. For some time now, we’ve missed that opportunity,” Mr Nketia said.

He advocated for the reinstating of these outreach programmes to maintain a strong connection with the public and assured them of his commitment to continue being an active and engaged leader.

Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, described Mr Nketia’s visit to Ho and other constituencies as part of his ongoing nationwide Thank You tour as apt, saying the party, during the campaign period, called on the Volta region and Ghana to labour communally for victory, and it was just right to go back as a party to show gratitude.

He referenced Luke 17:11-19 of the Bible to underline the need to show gratitude and to assure the electorate that the NDC would not wait till the election year to come to them, canvassing for votes.

Gov’t to replace NPA Act 2005 as part of major downstream reforms – Energy Minister

0

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that government is in the process of repealing and replacing the National Petroleum Authority Act, 2005 (as amended), as part of far-reaching reforms to modernise Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.

Speaking during his visit to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) on Wednesday, October 15, Dr Jinapor said the decision forms part of a comprehensive reform programme aimed at strengthening the legal and regulatory framework of the downstream sector.

“This is not a step taken lightly, but one rooted in the need to bring our regulatory regime in line with global best practices,” he stated.

He said the review process had been thorough and inclusive, involving consultations with key industry stakeholders, private sector players, and civil society organisations.

“As Minister, I have personally engaged all key stakeholders, not once, not twice but several times, to ensure that every critical issue is brought to the table and addressed,” he explained.

The Minister noted that the repeal and replacement of the NPA Act was not merely a legislative exercise but a strategic transformation.

“The repeal and replacement of the Act is not just a legislative exercise but a transformation that will define the next chapter of our downstream sector,” he said.

Mr Jinapor commended the leadership and staff of the NPA for their professionalism and commitment to reform.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s support to build “a regulatory institution that is strong, adaptive and respected both locally and internationally.”

Aggressive cedi strengthening is at a great cost to the nation – Bokpin

0

Economist and Professor at the University of Ghana, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has cautioned against Ghana’s current aggressive currency stabilisation.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight on Wednesday, October 16, Prof Bokpin described the strengthening of the cedi as “a great cost to the country.”

He warned that the policies and interventions sustaining it are eroding private sector competitiveness and threatening environmental sustainability.

“We are achieving this aggressive strengthening of the currency at a great cost to the country.

“In a certain stance, we are reminded to aggressively deal with illegal mining because we suspect there could be a structural break in the supply of gold.

“People are dying, and we are destroying our water bodies—all because 32 million people are obsessed with a low exchange rate.”

According to him, while the Bank of Ghana’s interventions have helped to stabilise the cedi, they have come at the expense of credit availability and growth.

“If you track the data, you’ll notice that the level of stabilisation the Bank of Ghana has done runs into billions of cedis. That credit, which could have been available for businesses to borrow at low cost, expand, and create jobs, is no longer available,” he explained.

Prof Bokpin cautioned that such an approach undermines long-term economic resilience and stifles private sector growth.

“What that means is that we are having this aggressive strengthening at a great cost to private sector competitiveness,” he stressed.

He urged policymakers to balance currency stabilisation efforts with strategies that promote sustainable economic growth, protect the environment, and ensure that fiscal and monetary policies do not choke private sector recovery.

His comments come after the Ghana cedi recorded one of its biggest gains against the dollar since the third quarter of 2025.

Data from major commercial banks seen by Joy Business show that between October 6 and October 10, 2025, the cedi appreciated by about 5% on the interbank market.

This marks the first time since the third quarter of 2025 that the cedi has posted such sharp gains against the U.S. dollar.

  1. Grants: Barclay College provides grants, which are essentially free money that does not require repayment. These grants may be awarded based on financial need, academic achievements, or specific criteria set by the college.
  2. Loans: Students can also explore loan options at Barclay College. Loans provide funding that must be repaid after completing your education. It is essential to carefully consider the terms and conditions associated with loans before opting for them.
  3. Work-Study Opportunities: Barclay College offers work-study programs where students can earn money while studying on campus or in approved off-campus positions. This allows students to gain valuable work experience while earning funds for their education.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for financial aid at Barclay College, certain eligibility requirements must be met:

  • Enrollment as a degree-seeking student at Barclay College
  • Maintaining satisfactory academic progress
  • U.S citizenship or eligible non-citizenship status
  • Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Importance of Completing FAFSA

Completing the FAFSA is vital when applying for financial aid at Barclay College as well as most other higher education institutions across the United States.

The FAFSA determines eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work-study programs. It is a standardized application that collects information about your family’s financial situation, allowing the college to assess your need for financial assistance accurately.

By submitting the FAFSA, you open doors to various federal aid programs such as the Pell Grant, Federal Work-Study, and Direct Loans. Completing the FAFSA may also make you eligible for state and institutional aid programs.

Scholarships for Full Tuition Coverage

Barclay College understands the financial burden that tuition costs can pose on students and their families. To alleviate this concern, the college offers a range of scholarships that cover full tuition expenses.

These scholarships provide an excellent opportunity for students to pursue their education without worrying about the financial aspect. Let’s delve into the details of these full-tuition scholarships at Barclay College.

Qualifying for Full-Tuition Scholarships

To be eligible for full-tuition scholarships at Barclay College, students must meet specific criteria set by the institution. Academic performance, extracurricular involvement, leadership qualities, and community service are some factors considered during the selection process. The college aims to recognize exceptional individuals who demonstrate a commitment to both their studies and making a positive impact in their communities.

Specific Scholarships Offered by Barclay College

Barclay College offers various scholarships that cover full tuition costs. Here are a few examples:

Benefits and Limitations of Full-Tuition Scholarships

Full-tuition scholarships offer numerous benefits to recipients, allowing them to focus on their studies rather than worrying about financing their education:

  • Financial Relief: By covering all tuition costs, these scholarships alleviate the financial burden on students and their families, enabling them to pursue their academic goals without incurring substantial debt.
  • Increased Opportunities: Full-tuition scholarships open doors to higher education for students who may not have had the means to attend college otherwise. This ensures that deserving individuals have access to quality education and the opportunity to enhance their future prospects.
  • Motivation and Recognition: Being awarded a full-tuition scholarship serves as recognition of an individual’s hard work and achievements. It motivates students to continue excelling academically while encouraging them to make positive contributions within and beyond the college campus.

While full-tuition scholarships provide significant advantages, it is essential to consider certain limitations:

  • Limited Availability: Full-tuition scholarships are highly competitive due to their comprehensive coverage. As a result, only a limited number of scholarships are available each year, making the selection process challenging.
  • Additional Expenses: While tuition costs are covered by these scholarships, students must still consider other expenses such as textbooks, accommodation, meals, and personal expenses. Scholarships typically focus on tuition fees rather than covering all aspects of student life.

Accessing Additional Funds for Tuition Assistance

Many students and their families may find themselves in need of additional funds beyond what they have already secured. Luckily, there are various alternative sources to consider when seeking extra financial assistance specifically tailored for Barclay College tuition payment.

Exploring these options can help alleviate the burden of student loans and provide a more accessible pathway towards achieving higher education goals.

State-Specific Grant Programs

One avenue to explore is state-specific grant programs. These programs are designed to assist students with their educational expenses and can be an excellent way to secure additional funds for tuition payment at Barclay College.

Each state has its own set of grants available, so it is essential to research the specific offerings in your state of residence. Some states offer grants based on financial need, academic achievement, or particular fields of study.

By taking advantage of these opportunities, students can reduce their reliance on student loan payments and access funds that do not require repayment.

Employer-Sponsored Education Assistance Programs

Another option worth considering is employer-sponsored education assistance programs. Many companies recognize the value of investing in their employees’ education and offer financial support for tuition costs.

These programs typically come in the form of reimbursement or direct payment arrangements. By utilizing this benefit, students can significantly offset their tuition expenses without accumulating excessive student loan debt.

It is advisable to consult with the human resources department at your place of employment to determine if such a program exists and how you can take advantage of it.

Community-Based Organizations Offering Educational Funding

In addition to state-specific grants and employer-sponsored programs, investigating community-based organizations that offer educational funding can also provide valuable resources towards Barclay College tuition payment.

These organizations often aim to support local students by providing scholarships or grants based on various criteria such as academic merit, community involvement, or financial need.

Researching and connecting with these organizations within your community can open doors to additional funds that can be used towards tuition costs.

By exploring alternative sources for additional funds, students can reduce their reliance on student loans and alleviate the burden of loan payments. Some other options to consider include:

  • Applying for Title IV assistance, which includes federal grants, work-study programs, and loans.
  • Exploring the possibility of a Parent PLUS Loan, which allows parents to borrow money to cover their child’s education expenses.
  • Understanding the implications of unearned funds if a student withdraws from courses or drops out of college.
  • Investigating HEA program funds available through the Higher Education Act (HEA).
  • Seeking guidance from financial aid offices regarding disbursement schedules and how it affects tuition payment.

Remember, when seeking additional funds for tuition assistance at Barclay College, it is crucial to thoroughly research each option and understand any associated requirements or limitations.

By taking advantage of these alternative sources and reducing reliance on student loans, students can make their educational journey more affordable and accessible.

Tips for Affording College at Barclay

Practical strategies to manage college expenses effectively

Managing college expenses can be a daunting task, but with the right strategies in place, you can navigate through it successfully. At Barclay College, there are several practical steps you can take to ensure that your tuition payments are more manageable.

First and foremost, create a detailed budget tailored specifically to your needs as a student at Barclay. This will allow you to track your income and expenses effectively.

Start by listing all your sources of income, such as scholarships, grants, part-time jobs, or parental support. Then, identify your monthly expenses including tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation costs, transportation, and personal expenses.

Once you have a clear understanding of your financial situation, explore ways to cut down on unnecessary expenditures.

Consider purchasing used textbooks instead of new ones; this could save you a significant amount of money over the course of your studies. Look for cost-saving measures. Sharing an apartment or dormitory with other students can help reduce accommodation costs substantially.

Budgeting techniques specifically tailored to students at Barclay College

Budgeting is an essential skill that every student should develop early on in their college journey. To make the most out of your time at Barclay while keeping your finances in check:

  1. Prioritize essential expenses: Allocate funds for tuition fees and required textbooks before considering discretionary spending.
  2. Set realistic goals: Determine how much money you need each month for groceries, transportation, and personal items.
  3. Track your spending: Use mobile apps or spreadsheets to monitor where your money is going and identify areas where you can cut back.
  4. Take advantage of on-campus resources: Utilize facilities such as the library or computer labs instead of spending money elsewhere.
  5. Cook meals instead of eating out: Preparing meals at home is not only healthier but also more cost-effective.

By implementing these budgeting techniques, you can ensure that your money is allocated wisely and avoid unnecessary financial stress during your time at Barclay College.

Exploring part-time job opportunities on or off-campus

One effective way to offset college expenses is by seeking part-time employment. Barclay College offers various on-campus job opportunities that can provide both financial support and valuable work experience.

These jobs may include working in the library, assisting professors, or participating in research projects.

If on-campus options are limited, explore off-campus part-time job opportunities within the local community. Many businesses near Barclay College are often willing to hire students for flexible hours.

Working a few hours per week can help cover expenses such as textbooks, and transportation costs, or even contribute towards tuition fees.

Seeking out cost-saving measures such as used textbooks or shared housing options

Textbooks are notorious for their high prices, but there are ways to save money without compromising your education. Consider purchasing used textbooks from online platforms or bookstores specializing in second-hand materials.

You’ll find that used books are significantly cheaper and still serve the purpose just as well as new ones.

Shared housing options can greatly reduce your accommodation costs. Connect with fellow students who are looking for roommates and split the rent of an apartment or dormitory.

Not only will this save you money, but it also provides an opportunity to build friendships and create a supportive community during your time at Barclay College.

Controversial Ghanaian marriage counsellor, George Lutterodt, has sparked fresh debate with his latest remarks claiming that “no woman truly loves her husband, not even my own wife.”

During a discussion on marital dynamics, Lutterodt argued that many women mistakenly believe that being protective of their husbands equates to love. According to him, such behaviour undermines masculinity rather than expressing genuine affection.

“There’s no woman who loves her husband, including my wife. The fact that you’re married to a man and decide to protect him doesn’t mean you love him,” he declared. “Any man who allows his wife to protect him has a mental problem.”

Lutterodt went on to explain that the only woman with authority over a man should be his mother, not his wife. “One of the people who can order you around as a man is your mother. Any man who gets married never wants to live with his mother again,” he said.

The outspoken counsellor further claimed that women who constantly follow their husbands everywhere, under the guise of love, take on the role of a “mother figure”, something he believes damages a man’s sense of independence.
