The Electoral Commission of Ghana was established by Act of Parliament in 1993 as an autonomous body with the sole mandate of overseeing elections in Ghana.
Since it’s establishment, the commission has performed excellent in organizing successful elections in Ghana till date. It has also become a model of excellence in Africa due to the professionalism and non-partisan stance it’s exhibit.
Furthermore, the role of the Electoral Commission of Ghana include conduct of referendum, supervision of local government, parliamentary and presidential elections, registration of political parties, voters and others.
Over the past few months, the commission’s decision to conduct new voter register to replace the old one has been a hot debate between the two most successful political parties in Ghana thus the New Patriot Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The NPP supports the Electoral Commission’s decision whilst the NDC declines. The commission has explained it’s decision to organize new registration to ensure sanity in the voter register but the NDC is leading a crusade for the commission to avert it’s decision.
Speaking in an interview with Alhaji Irbard Ibrahim on ‘Fontomfrom’ morning show on Kantanka TV, the Methodist University Lecturer, Dr. Bernard Tutu-Boahen commended the Electoral Commission of Ghana for their efforts in ensuring sanity in the voter register thereby trying to organize the registration of new voter register as one of the  requirements for the 2020 elections.
“The E.C over the years has exhibited exceptional role in handling our electoral system and I believe in them in coming out with good decisions that will ensure an improved democratic system in Ghana”, he reiterates.
Tutu Boahen however advised the political parties to rally their support behind the Electoral Commission to ensure a free and fair elections in Ghana as always established.
