Indiscipline among the youth of today has become a major challenge in the world and Ghana is not exempted. There is nothing without a cause therefore I will like to consider the causes of bad behavior among our youth of today and give my recommendations.

In the first place, one basic factor that contributes to bad behaviors among our youth of today is foreign culture. Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. In other instances, it is defined as shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs and understanding that are learned by socialization. Thus, it can be seen as the growth of a group identity fostered by social patterns unique to the group.

Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at the table, how we greet visitors, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things.

As the youth come into contact with foreign movies, phonographic videos and pictures, they adopt and imitate some. Foreign fashion is also a factor that leads the youth to adopt bad behavior. The term “foreign culture” has come to define the culture of Europeans, Americans, Asians and other parts of the world outside a particular jurisdiction as well as those that have been heavily influenced by immigration. Foreign culture has its roots in the classical period of the Greco-Roman era and the rise of Christianity in the 14th century.

As the days go by, the youth adopt foreign culture such as education and fashion and end up losing respect for elders and feel they are modern people. For our youth, the act of indiscipline is a sign of modernity and fashion. Indiscipline in our youth today does not reflect only in their way of dressing but also their attitude towards life and way of doing things.

Moreover, the use of hard drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, and heroin also could cause the youth to put up bad behavior in our society. This is due to the adverse side effects on their bodies and minds. They end up talking harsh, misbehaving and also demonstrating all sorts of bad behaviors. Gone were the days when elderly people could put a child right, when he or she goes wrong. Woe betides anyone who tries to put a child right today as compared to the way of life some decades ago.

In addition, Peer group influence is another factor that could trigger bad behavior in our society, there is a biblical saying that bad company corrupt good manners, most youth are influenced by their friends as they move day in and day out and end up imitating their friend’s bad behavior and their ways of doing things.

Another cause of indiscipline among the youth is family instability, many causes of indiscipline are connected with family instability. Constant family quarrels could become one of the causes of psychological trauma in their life, which makes them exhibit similar behaviors wherever they find themselves. Children whose parents have divorced are also likely to have poor upbringing due to lack of parental control which in this case could make these youths tend to be indisciplined.

These problems can be tackled by establishing good interaction and dialogue between our elders, parents, guardians and the youth. Again, guidance and counseling should be encouraged in the various schools, churches, mosques and our societies. Youth empowerment should also be encouraged.

Developing a nation depends on the attitudes of our youth and therefore there is a need to prepare our youth for a better future. It is the duty of leaders of our society and all respectable bodies to instill discipline and help to inculcate the attitude of discipline among the youth in all manners.
