The Director of Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute at Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), Dr. Michael Yao Osae has lamented that the increased demand in foreign diets is the major cause of the fall in the agriculture sector in Ghana.

According to him, Ghanaians have become too used to foreign taste which is one of the reasons most people prefer to eat jasmine rice from Thailand and not the local type. He added that most people didn’t know Ghana produces perfume rice until recently so it is a multiplicity of issues because the variety of food produce in terms of preservation do not have long lifespans that will sustain the body for survival.

He continued that, Ghanaians look down on things produced in Ghana and cited an example of traders who promote foreign goods and services. Dr. Osae stated that, these traders endorse foreign goods because they believe that, if they do not promote them, they will not have fast sales of their own goods.

Dr. Osae indicated that when one goes to the market to buy some vegetables such as tomato, pepper and the likes, the market women will tell you their goods were imported from Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. This shows their disbelief in Ghana products being better.

Speaking on the fertilizers being used on farm produce, Dr. Osae said it is not always right to use fertilizers on crops since excessive use of fertilizer can diminish the quality of food produce and destroy the soil in which these crops are grown. He however advised farmers to only apply chemicals on their farm when they are being attacked by pests.

He discussed this in an interview with Akwasi Ofori, host of the rebranded talk show, ‘Kantanka Exclusive’ on Kantanka Television on Tuesday.
