I want to make history with Wasiru against Isaac Dogboe – Lartekwei Lartey

Lartekwei Lartey, trainer of World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global super bantamweight titlist, Wasiru ‘Gyatabi’ Mohammed, has accepted a challenge by former WBO super bantamweight champion, Isaac Dogboe, stating that his ward would inflict a third straight defeat on Dogboe if fight takes place.

Lartey believes his experience in the sport would cushion Wasiru to add more misery to the former world champion whose father, Paul Dogboe, threw a challenge to have the bout staged.

In a video on Facebook on Monday, Paul Dogboe called out Wasiru for a fight which he said would be one of the biggest bouts in the country in recent times if it comes off.

However, it is unclear if the bout would take place before the end of the year, especially as both camps are yet to accept the challenge and begin any negotiations to have it staged as soon as possible.

In an interview with Graphic Sports Online, Lartey explained that his boxer was ready to add more blemish to the woes of the former world champion who has relocated to the US in a bid to revive his career after back-to-back world title losses.

He was confident that Wasiru could use a win over Dogboe as a springboard to land a world title shot and called on the entire nation to help make the fight happen in order to help revive boxing in the country.

“I think this is the time for me to make history with Wasiru by beating Dogboe should the fight take place. We are more than ready to fight him and I don’t see him going past us in a bout.

“I am very confident because I believe my years of experience as a trainer will be bring to bear and it is going to cushion him to victory,” he said.

Dogboe, 24, has not fought since making an unsuccessful bod to reclaim his world title six months ago.

Having lost two consecutive fights to Mexico’s Emanuel Navarrete in December 2018 and May 2019, Dogboe will be looking forward to coming back stronger after reigning as a world titlist for just eight months.

Wasiru is undefeated in 11 fights with 10 knockout victories.
